A Rabbit Paper Bag Puppet

Paper bag puppets are probably the most accessible of all the many types of puppets that exist. They’re easy to make, easy to manipulate and fun to watch. And on top of that, there recyclable!

What paper bag puppets have in common with sock puppets is that the forearm acts as the body of the puppet and the hand is used to animate the mouth of the puppet. This is quite an advantage over other hand puppets where the head and the arms can move but the mouth is usually not animated.

But I find that paper bag puppets are easier to decorate than sock puppets because you can work with construction paper, crayons, paint, or whatever medium you want. Also, it’s easy to glue buttons, sequins or other decorations on the paper bag if you want to get really fancy!

I recently made a rabbit puppet from a paper bag. It’s a great craft for Easter, but even at other times of the year the rabbit can be used in children’s stories.

And don’t forget the fable of the tortoise and the hare. I know, a hare isn’t a rabbit, but when they’re puppets, can you see the difference?
